Leveling your camping trailer can go a long way toward ensuring comfort and stability. If your model doesn’t come with an automatic leveling system, you might find the process to be prolonged and burdensome, which is why Price Right RV has created this guide to easier camper trailer leveling.

Find a Suitable Location

Finding the right location can go a long way toward making the leveling process easier. Before you start, try to find the flattest spot possible so that you don’t have to compensate for uneven terrain. Avoid leveling on loose materials like sand or gravel, as they can shift under pressure. Remember that sometimes you will have to make the best out of a bad site, so keep calm and try to find the best location possible.

Level from Side to Side

While your camping trailer is still attached to its tow vehicle, use a level to determine which side will need to be raised and by how much. Move forward and place leveling blocks or boards in the places where your tires will eventually go. Then, back up the unit and check that everything is even. Repeat the process several times, making minor adjustments each time, until the travel trailer is completely even. Once you’re satisfied that your RV is even, secure the wheels and disconnect the tow vehicle.

Level from Front to Back

Your next step is to level from front to back by adjusting the hitch using your jack. Keep adjusting until your level tells you that everything is even and then finish up by locking your hitch.

Stabilize

Your final step will be to stabilize your camping trailer so that it remains level even when you move around inside it. Depending upon the model, your trailer’s jacks might be automatic or require a tool to raise or lower them. If your RV falls into the latter category, you can attach the tool to a drill in order to speed up the process. Either way, make sure that your jacks are firmly pressed into the ground without shoving into it.

We highly recommend that you don’t use your jacks to level your camping trailer. The jacks are designed to support weight, not make fine adjustments. Plus, adjusting one jack will usually mean that you will need to adjust the other three as well, making the whole process highly inefficient.
